Independent Lawmaker Mahabir Pun Recommended as Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has recommended independent lawmaker Mahabir Pun for appointment as Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

According to Prime Minister's Press Advisor Deepa Dahal, Pun is scheduled to take the oath of office and secrecy at 3:00 PM today.

Pun's appointment is being viewed as a significant development in Nepal's political landscape, as independent members of parliament are rarely appointed to ministerial positions in the country's party-dominated political system.

Elected from Myagdi-1 as an independent candidate, Pun's selection breaks a long-standing political tradition and reflects the government's willingness to bring experienced and non-partisan figures into key policy roles.

This will not be Pun's first experience in government. He previously served as Minister of Education, Science and Technology under an interim administration, where he was recognized for advocating reforms in science, technology, and innovation policies.

As the head of the newly established Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Pun will oversee a dedicated portfolio focused on technological advancement, research, innovation, and digital transformation.

At 71 years old, Pun is widely regarded as one of Nepal's most respected innovators and development leaders. He is the founder of the National Innovation Center and is credited with pioneering wireless internet connectivity in remote Himalayan communities.

His contributions to technology, education, and community development have earned him national and international recognition, including the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Observers believe Pun's appointment could bring greater emphasis to innovation-driven development, technological entrepreneurship, research commercialization, and digital infrastructure expansion in Nepal.
