Kathmandu Metropolitan City has officially declared its jurisdiction free of street-dependent homeless individuals under the slogan, "Those without support are Kathmandu Metropolitan City's responsibility."

The declaration was made by Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol during a special program held on Monday.

To ensure the effective implementation of the campaign, Kathmandu Metropolitan City signed a cooperation agreement with Nepal Police, the District Administration Office, and Human Service Ashram.

The agreement aims to establish an integrated system of communication, coordination, support, and management for individuals found living on streets or in public spaces in the future.

The agreement was signed by Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol on behalf of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki on behalf of Nepal Police, Chief District Officer Ishwor Raj Paudel on behalf of the District Administration Office, and Human Service Ashram Chairman Ramji Adhikari.

Speaking at the event, Dangol stated that the initiative seeks to establish Kathmandu not only as a cultural city but also as a city founded on humanity, dignity, and social responsibility.

Former Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha also addressed the program, emphasizing that society can no longer afford to neglect humanitarian responsibilities and calling for collective commitment from all stakeholders.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has been working in partnership with Human Service Ashram since 2017 and has been spending an average of around Rs 20 million annually on rehabilitation and support programs.

During the event, Human Service Ashram and the Ani Choying Drolma Foundation also announced the completion of the Mechi-Mahakali Campaign.

According to Human Service Ashram Chairman Ramji Adhikari, the campaign successfully rescued and rehabilitated 197 vulnerable and homeless individuals.

Ani Choying Drolma, founder of the foundation, described the agreement as a significant milestone for the promotion of humanity and social welfare, adding that she would remember the occasion as a special and meaningful day.

The event was attended by prominent personalities including senior cardiologist Dr. Bhagawan Koirala, veteran artist Madan Krishna Shrestha, and cultural expert Dr. Govinda Tandon, among others.

Officials stated that a coordination committee will be formed to ensure effective implementation of the agreement, facilitate regular meetings among stakeholders, and manage the resources necessary for sustaining the initiative.
