Nepal Telecom Expands Digital Connectivity in Remote Himalayan Regions, Even Using Helicopters

With the aim of ensuring digital access for all citizens, telecommunications services are being expanded to geographically remote and sparsely populated areas of Nepal.

As part of this initiative, Nepal Telecom has even been transporting equipment via helicopters to extend connectivity in high Himalayan regions.

The company is prioritizing digital inclusion over commercial profitability, focusing on reducing the digital divide across the country.

According to government policy for fiscal year 2083/84, expanding digital access to remote areas remains a key priority, supported by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Nepal Telecom is actively working on nationwide expansion of 4G services while preparing for 5G rollout. The government has opened the 3300–3700 MHz band to facilitate 5G deployment.

The company has been using solar-powered towers, VSAT technology, and optical fiber networks to provide services in off-grid areas.

Recently, 4G services have been successfully deployed at altitudes above 3,900 meters in districts such as Dolpa, Taplejung, and Sankhuwasabha, benefiting thousands of users across hundreds of households.

Areas such as Tripurasundari, Dunai, Thulibheri, Olangchungola, Pathibhara, and Ghunsa have received expanded mobile network coverage.

In Sankhuwasabha, new BTS towers and microwave links have been installed in the Makalu and Bhotkhola regions, including Kimalthanka, enabling microwave-based 4G connectivity.

The company is currently operating satellite-based GSM services in more than 38 remote locations across Nepal.

Future expansion plans include extending 4G services to the Badimalika temple area and Everest Base Camp region.

This initiative is expected to improve access to online education, digital payments, healthcare services, and government services while promoting tourism and regional development in remote Himalayan regions.
