3,303 Public Vehicles in Kathmandu Equipped with Dashcams, CCTV and GPS Systems
A total of 3,303 public transport vehicles operating in the Kathmandu Valley have been equipped with dashcams, CCTV cameras and GPS systems to improve passenger safety, monitoring and transport management.

Authorities have accelerated the adoption of technology in Kathmandu Valley’s public transportation sector to make services safer, more organized and passenger-friendly.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, dashcams, CCTV cameras and GPS tracking systems have already been installed in 3,303 public service vehicles operating across the valley.
The mandatory installation of these technologies aims to strengthen passenger safety, improve vehicle monitoring and enhance the overall management of public transportation services.
Following regular inspections by the Department of Transport Management and traffic police, transport operators have increasingly prioritized the installation of these systems.
Senior Superintendent of Police Suresh Prasad Kafle stated that the technology would help curb passenger mistreatment, overcharging of fares and other irregularities in public transportation services.
He also noted that dashcams and GPS systems would assist in determining responsibility during road accidents, reducing potential insurance fraud and ensuring greater accountability among drivers and vehicle operators.
With GPS tracking, vehicle owners can monitor the real-time location and operational status of their vehicles, improving fleet management and operational efficiency.
Nepal National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs President Saroj Sitoula described the initiative as a positive step, adding that transport operators are ready to expand implementation once the government introduces clear operational guidelines.
Traffic officials plan to gradually make these systems mandatory for all public transport vehicles operating within the Kathmandu Valley, expecting significant improvements in passenger security, accident management and transport governance.
