Bird Flu Confirmed in Bhaktapur, Over 48,000 Chickens Culled

A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Bhaktapur district, prompting authorities to cull more than 48,000 chickens in affected poultry farms. According to livestock officials, the infection was detected in farms located within Changunarayan and Suryabinayak municipalities, leading to immediate containment measures.

Veterinary officials reported that 38,795 chickens were destroyed in farms across Changunarayan Municipality, while another 9,378 birds were culled in Suryabinayak Municipality. The large-scale culling operation was carried out to prevent the spread of avian influenza to other poultry farms and surrounding areas.

Authorities have increased monitoring and biosecurity measures in affected zones. Poultry farmers have been advised to maintain strict hygiene standards, restrict unnecessary movement around farms, and immediately report any signs of illness among birds.

The outbreak highlights the ongoing importance of disease surveillance in Nepal’s poultry sector. Experts say early detection and rapid response are critical to minimizing economic losses and preventing wider transmission of bird flu. The incident may also impact local poultry production and supply chains if further cases emerge.
