Floods and landslides have disrupted major highways across Nepal, raising concerns over the movement of food and other essential goods ahead of the festive season. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS) has assured consumers that sufficient stocks are available and supply disruptions are being addressed.

The ministry said it has stepped up preparations amid forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across parts of the country. It said adequate stocks of food and other essential commodities are being maintained to meet potential disruptions and increased festive-season demand.

According to the ministry, sufficient food stocks are currently available under the National Food Security Reserve and SAARC Food Security Bank, while distribution of food and other essential commodities in the market is continuing smoothly.

With several major roads blocked by floods and landslides, the government has also made arrangements to transport essential goods through alternative routes. MoICS said it is coordinating with the Department of Roads, local administrations and security agencies to keep supply chains operational if key highways remain disrupted.

The ministry has urged consumers not to engage in unnecessary hoarding or panic buying, warning that excessive stockpiling could put additional pressure on prices and supplies.

It has also warned traders against exploiting disaster-related or festive-season disruptions through price-fixing cartels, syndicates, black marketing, artificial shortages or hoarding. The ministry said action would be taken against such activities and urged consumers to report practices that could harm their interests.
