China has provided around Rs336 million in cash assistance to Nepal to support relief efforts following the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming handed over a cheque worth $2 million, equivalent to around Rs305 million, to Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle at the Ministry of Finance on Sunday.

The ambassador also handed over an additional $200,000, or around Rs30.6 million, provided by the Red Cross Society of China, bringing China’s cash assistance to approximately Rs336 million.

Zhang said China and Nepal would work together to respond to the disaster, which has affected communities on both sides of the border. He added that additional Chinese assistance had already begun arriving in Nepal.

Two Chinese Y-20 transport aircraft arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday carrying around 50 tonnes of emergency relief materials. The supplies included tents, blankets, sleeping bags, biscuits and first-aid kits, with around 13,200 individual relief items delivered.

China has also stepped up its rescue and emergency response support. Four Chinese tunnel rescue experts arrived in Kathmandu with specialised equipment to assist in rescuing people trapped inside hydropower tunnels. A Chinese helicopter and additional rescue personnel have also been deployed for emergency operations.

China is further preparing to send large-capacity drones requested by the Nepal government to support search and rescue operations in difficult-to-access areas.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to bring Nepalis stranded in China back through the Korala border point in Mustang, providing an additional route for people affected by the disaster and disruptions along the northern border.

Finance Minister Wagle thanked the Chinese government for its assistance and expressed condolences over the loss of Chinese lives in the disaster. He also said Nepal expected substantial Chinese support for the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by the floods.

The latest assistance combines direct financial support, emergency supplies, rescue expertise and equipment as Nepal continues relief and recovery operations following the Bhotekoshi flood.
