DHM Warns of Moderate Flash Flood Risk in Several Districts Amid Monsoon Rains

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of a moderate risk of flash floods in several districts, urging residents to remain vigilant as monsoon activity continues across the country.

According to the department, monsoon winds remain active nationwide, while the monsoon trough lies south of its normal position over eastern Nepal and near its average position in the western region, creating favorable conditions for widespread rainfall.

The DHM has forecast heavy rainfall in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, along with isolated areas of Madhesh Province. Rising water levels are expected in several small rivers and streams across these regions.

Flood expert Binod Parajuli said that small rivers flowing through Ilam, Jhapa, Terhathum, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang, Doti, Dadeldhura, and nearby districts are likely to experience significant increases in water levels, posing a moderate flash flood risk.

The department reported that light to moderate rainfall occurred across most parts of Nepal over the past 24 hours, with the highest rainfall of 98.6 mm recorded at Yangjakot in Kaski District. Authorities have advised people living near rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and take necessary precautions.
