Egg prices have reached a record high in Nepal after the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association increased farm-gate prices for most varieties by Rs 15 per crate.

The new prices came into effect on September 4, 2026, with the association citing rising production costs and the need to maintain a balance between supply and market demand.

Under the revised price list, the farm-gate price of XL-sized eggs has increased from Rs 590 to Rs 605 per crate. Similarly, the price of large eggs has risen from Rs 575 to Rs 590 per crate, while medium-sized eggs have increased from Rs 535 to Rs 550 per crate.

The price of small eggs remains unchanged under the latest revision.

These are farm-gate prices, while consumers are paying Rs 25 per egg for the applicable retail category. The consumer price for medium-sized eggs has been set at Rs 45 for two eggs, equivalent to Rs 22.50 per egg.

According to association secretary Madan Pokharel, the prices have been fixed nationwide primarily based on prevailing prices in Chitwan, one of Nepal's major poultry-producing areas.

Poultry farmers have been facing increasing pressure from higher input costs. The association said continued increases in the prices of chicken feed, medicines and transportation have raised production costs, prompting the latest adjustment in farm-gate prices.

The latest increase comes after the association's previous price revision on August 20, marking another rise in egg prices within a short period.

With egg prices now at their highest recorded level, higher poultry production costs are increasingly being passed through the supply chain to consumers.
