Flood Inundates Kirtipur Holding Center, Displaced Squatter Families Demand Permanent Resettlement

Floodwaters have inundated the Kirtipur Holding Center, where displaced squatter families from Kathmandu are currently being sheltered, leaving dozens of families in a difficult situation.

The affected residents said the government had promised to provide permanent resettlement within 15 days, but more than three months have passed without any concrete action. They have expressed frustration over being forced to stay in what they describe as an unsafe temporary shelter.

According to the victims, floodwaters entered the holding center at around 12:45 a.m., putting children, elderly residents, and people with chronic illnesses at greater risk. Many families were unable to save their clothes, food supplies, and other essential belongings after water rapidly entered the shelter.

Victim Dalamardan Kami criticized the government for failing to provide proper management, claiming that only minimal relief had been distributed. He said residents were forced to remain awake throughout the night and questioned how long they would have to continue living under such conditions.

Another resident, Kanchhimaya Ghalan, said the floodwaters entered while families were asleep, leaving them with barely enough time to save only umbrellas and mobile phones. Most bedding, clothing, and daily household items were soaked and damaged.

Residents also alleged that security personnel arrived for rescue operations only around 3:00 a.m. They accused the government of neglecting their welfare and failing to implement a proper rehabilitation plan.

Displaced resident Dambar Tamang estimated that he suffered property losses worth around Rs. 100,000 due to the flooding. The holding center also houses patients suffering from heart disease, kidney ailments, and asthma, raising concerns that the cold and damp conditions could further worsen their health.

The affected families have urged the government to immediately relocate them to a safer place, provide permanent housing, and ensure adequate relief and support.
