Ganesh Nepali Dies During Treatment After Self-Immolation Attempt in Kathmandu

Ganesh Nepali, a 25-year-old resident of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu, has died while undergoing treatment after attempting self-immolation in Kathmandu, police said.

Nepali had doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar on Thursday. He was immediately rescued and admitted to Bir Hospital for treatment.

According to Kathmandu Police Range spokesperson SP Pawan Bhattarai, Nepali died during treatment. However, the hospital administration has not yet issued an official confirmation.

Dr. Piyush Dahal, coordinator of Bir Hospital’s Department of Plastic Surgery, said that about 60 percent of Nepali’s body had suffered severe burns. Critical areas including his face, head, and neck were extensively damaged. Due to breathing difficulties observed immediately after admission, he was intubated in the emergency room and placed on a ventilator.

A 21-member specialist medical team led by Dr. Dahal was involved in his treatment. The team included plastic surgeons, critical care specialists, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff.

Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
