The government has estimated that Rs. 2.34 billion will be required for the recovery of the education sector affected by the devastating flood in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa on Bhadra 10.

According to a Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment report prepared by a joint technical team including the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 18 schools were affected by the flood.

Among the affected schools, 11 school buildings were completely destroyed, while seven sustained partial damage. Educational materials, furniture, and other school property were also destroyed by the flood.

More than 9,000 students in the affected area have had their education disrupted following the disaster.

The government estimates that Rs. 105 million will be required immediately to reconstruct damaged structures and facilitate the resumption of classes. An additional Rs. 2.238 billion is estimated to be required for long-term recovery.

The government has announced a ‘Guaranteed Future Scholarship Scheme’ for students affected by the flood. Five organizations representing private schools in Nepal have also committed Rs. 1 billion in support to provide scholarships to flood-affected students at the government’s request.

Local governments are facilitating arrangements for displaced students to continue their education at schools located conveniently near where they are currently staying, allowing classes to resume as soon as possible.
