Hetauda–Dhalkebar 400 kV Transmission Line Set to Operate After Dashain

The long-delayed Hetauda–Dhalkebar 400 kV transmission line has entered its final stage, with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) preparing to charge and bring the line into operation shortly after Dashain.

The project, which has remained under construction for around 12 years, is now awaiting the completion of two remaining mult circuit towers. Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha inspected the Hetauda–Dhalkebar 400 kV substation and directed officials to complete the remaining construction work on time.

According to NEA Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, 14 of the 16 towers of the transmission line have already been completed. Construction of the remaining two mult circuit towers has also reached its final stage.

The NEA expects to complete the remaining tower construction within 10 to 15 days and subsequently charge the transmission line.

Once operational, the transmission line is expected to strengthen east-west electricity transmission, improve the reliability of the national power grid and help manage growing industrial electricity demand.

The project will also support increased domestic electricity consumption, management of surplus electricity during the monsoon season and expansion of electricity trade with neighboring countries, including India.

According to Minister Shrestha, the area currently handles around 300 MW of electricity flow. After completion of the transmission line, the capacity is expected to increase to around 2,000 MW.

The NEA stated that the project, which had remained stalled for a long period, gained momentum after the government moved the necessary process forward through a Cabinet decision.
