India-US Trade Deal Talks Enter Final Stage, Says USTR Greer

Negotiations between India and the United States on a proposed bilateral trade agreement have entered the final stage, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. However, Greer said an agreement was not imminent and that officials from both countries were still working through unresolved issues.

Speaking after the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee on October 1, Greer said the two sides had identified the remaining sticking points and were working to resolve them. He described the negotiations as being in the “short strokes,” referring to the closing stage of the process.

Modi and Trump May Speak Again

Greer said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had a constructive phone conversation and could speak again soon to review progress on the trade negotiations.

Goyal-Greer Discussions Continue

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also held discussions with Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting.

Greer described their conversation as constructive and said officials from both countries were continuing to work toward completing the trade agreement.

India’s government had said Goyal’s US visit was aimed at advancing a balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement and working toward an interim deal based on the February 7, 2026 joint statement.

Outstanding Issues Remain

Although negotiations are described as being in the final stretch, several sticking points remain under discussion. Greer cautioned that there was nothing immediately ready for announcement.

The negotiations have continued amid changes in the US tariff environment and discussions over market access and other trade-related issues. India and the US have been working toward an interim agreement as part of their broader bilateral trade negotiations.
