Janakpur Emerging as an International Religious Tourism Destination
Janakpur, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, is transforming into a major international religious tourism destination, with growing investments in tourism infrastructure, cultural preservation, and local economic development.

Janakpur, the historic capital of Mithila and the birthplace of Goddess Sita, is steadily expanding its identity beyond a religious pilgrimage site into a major hub for tourism, culture, trade, and the local economy.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of domestic and international pilgrims visit Janakpur, strengthening its position as one of Nepal's leading religious tourism destinations. Iconic landmarks such as the Janaki Temple, Ram Temple, Vivah Mandap, Dhanush Sagar, Ganga Sagar, and numerous ancient monasteries and temples continue to attract visitors from Nepal and abroad.
The city's close cultural ties with India, the Ram-Janaki marriage tradition, and the annual Vivah Panchami Festival have further enhanced its international recognition as a religious tourism destination.
Madhesh Province Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav said religious tourism has the potential to become a major driver of regional economic growth by creating employment, attracting investment, and promoting local products. The provincial government has prioritized expanding tourism infrastructure, improving roads, enhancing sanitation, strengthening security, and creating a tourist-friendly environment.
Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism Kanish Patel said the government is implementing long-term plans to develop Janakpur into an international religious tourism hub through projects such as the Janakpur–Ayodhya Religious Circuit, infrastructure development, private sector collaboration, and global promotion of Mithila culture.
Religious leaders have also emphasized preserving Janakpur's spiritual heritage while integrating cultural conservation with tourism development. They believe connecting all Ram-Janaki-related sites into a unified pilgrimage circuit could elevate Janakpur into a world-class religious destination.
Beyond religious tourism, Janakpur is also gaining recognition for its rich cultural heritage, including Mithila art, Maithili language, traditional cuisine, local handicrafts, and folk traditions. Religious tourism has significantly boosted hotels, restaurants, transportation, handicrafts, flower businesses, and small enterprises, generating employment opportunities for thousands of local residents.
However, officials acknowledge that the absence of a comprehensive tourist data management system remains a challenge. Authorities are working to establish a technology-driven system for visitor data collection, tourism management, and promotion to support sustainable tourism growth.
Experts believe that further investment in parking facilities, multilingual tourist information centers, digital services, cleanliness, green spaces, and modern infrastructure will help position Janakpur as one of South Asia's premier religious and cultural tourism destinations.
