Madhesh Province Budget 2083/84: Priorities, Challenges, and Expectations for Economic Reform

The Madhesh Province Government is preparing to present its budget for the fiscal year 2083/84 on Asar 1, as mandated by the Constitution. The federal government has already unveiled its national budget on Jestha 15.

The upcoming provincial budget comes at a time when both the global and domestic economies are facing significant challenges. Economic slowdown, reduced investment activity, and weak public spending have become major concerns across the country.

For the current fiscal year, Madhesh Province announced a budget of approximately Rs. 46.98 billion. However, less than 20 percent of the allocated budget has been spent so far, raising concerns about implementation efficiency and development outcomes.

The focus is now on how the upcoming budget will address key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment generation, industrial development, and investment promotion. Another major issue is the recurring problem of budget freezes and underutilization of allocated funds.

In this episode of “Budget Talks Season 2,” a special discussion was held with Dr. Sohan Sah, former Vice-Chairperson of the Madhesh Province Policy and Planning Commission. He shared his views on the province’s economic situation, budget execution challenges, and the priorities that should be included in the upcoming fiscal plan.

Dr. Sah emphasized the importance of improving spending efficiency, strengthening governance, and directing resources toward productive sectors that can generate sustainable economic growth and employment opportunities in Madhesh Province.
