Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has unveiled a 32-point directive aimed at reforming Nepal’s energy sector. The directive emphasizes transparency, faster execution, and result-oriented governance.
The government is preparing to extend the license period of reservoir-based hydropower projects to 50 years. This move is intended to attract private sector investment and ensure long-term stability in the energy sector.
The minister stated that the directive, prepared after extensive discussions, will serve as a foundation for upcoming policies and programs. Relevant authorities have been instructed to complete tasks within deadlines, with regular monitoring in place.
Further reforms include implementing an open access electricity system, resolving PPA disputes, improving transparency in royalty distribution, and promoting initiatives such as green hydrogen and energy exports.
