Mexico has become the first team to secure a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating South Korea 1-0 on Friday.
The match, played in Guadalajara, was decided by a second-half goal from Mexican midfielder Luis Romo. Romo found the back of the net in the 50th minute, and his strike proved enough to seal all three points for Mexico.
With the victory, Mexico officially advanced to the knockout rounds, continuing its impressive run in the tournament and becoming the first nation to confirm qualification for the Round of 16.
Despite the defeat, South Korea remains in a strong position to progress. The Korean side previously defeated the Czech Republic and still controls its chances of advancing to the next stage.
