The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has stepped up preparations to manage rising electricity demand during the upcoming winter, forming a five-member committee to accelerate studies and necessary work.

A meeting held at the NEA on Tuesday, chaired by Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, decided to intensify preparations for winter power supply and demand management.

The move follows floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins that damaged hydropower stations and disrupted electricity generation in Rasuwa and surrounding areas.

The newly formed five-member committee will be coordinated by the director of the Bagmati Provincial Office. It has been instructed to submit daily progress reports to the executive director and immediately report any problems encountered during implementation.

Despite the disruption to generation from hydropower projects in the Trishuli basin, Shrestha said the situation would not require load-shedding during the coming winter. He said preparations were already underway to ensure reliable electricity supply.

The meeting also set deadlines for completing transmission and distribution projects currently under construction in and around Kathmandu Valley.

The NEA will also examine options to improve power reliability in flood-affected Nuwakot and Rasuwa. A separate team has been deployed to assess whether the flood-damaged Devighat substation can be brought back into operation.

NEA's current system data shows national peak demand has already reached 2,552 MW, highlighting the importance of strengthening supply and transmission capacity ahead of the winter demand season.
