Nepal Electricity Authority Reports Rs. 7.94 Billion in Street Light Arrears Nationwide, Over Rs. 2.34 Billion in Madhesh Province
Nepal Electricity Authority has reported over Rs. 7.94 billion in unpaid street light charges nationwide, with local governments in Madhesh Province alone owing more than Rs. 2.34 billion.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reported a significant amount of outstanding payments related to street lighting across the country.
According to NEA, street light dues (excluding additional charges) have reached Rs. 7.94 billion nationwide. Including a 25 percent penalty, the total arrears amount rises to Rs. 9.93 billion.
Out of this, local levels in Madhesh Province alone account for Rs. 2.34 billion in unpaid street light charges.
The authority stated that the rising dues are mainly due to unauthorized and unmetered street light installations by local governments.
NEA has already initiated nationwide correspondence to recover outstanding payments from all categories, including dedicated lines, trunk lines, internet service providers, and street lighting.
In Madhesh Province, most of the 136 local governments across eight districts have reportedly not cleared their street light electricity bills, contributing significantly to the growing arrears burden.
