Nepal Proposes Government-Level Cooperation with Switzerland to Establish Pharmaceutical Industry

National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal has proposed government-level cooperation with Switzerland to establish a world-class pharmaceutical industry in Nepal.

During a courtesy meeting with Pierre-André Page, President of the National Council of Switzerland, on Monday, Dahal requested support to bring Swiss pharmaceutical companies' expertise, technology and investment into Nepal. He said such cooperation could help Nepali citizens access high-quality medicines at affordable prices.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Dahal said Switzerland has several reputed pharmaceutical companies that manufacture medicines in accordance with international standards. He emphasized that establishing similar industries in Nepal with government-level support would benefit consumers by making quality medicines more accessible and affordable.

According to Dahal, Page encouraged Nepal to identify and communicate its specific requirements in the pharmaceutical sector and other areas where assistance is needed. He also expressed a commitment to taking necessary initiatives after receiving details of Nepal's priorities.

During the meeting, Dahal also thanked Switzerland for providing USD 2 million in assistance for the relief and rehabilitation of people affected by the recent floods in Bhotekoshi. He appreciated Switzerland's continued support during disasters and expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would continue in the future.

The two sides also exchanged greetings on the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Switzerland. Discussions were held on expanding parliamentary cooperation, including the formation of parliamentary friendship groups in both countries to facilitate the exchange of parliamentary practices, experience and mutual support.

Switzerland's commitment to exploring Nepal's needs and potential areas of assistance is expected to provide a basis for further discussions and government-level initiatives regarding the proposed pharmaceutical industry.
