Nepal Tightens E-Commerce Rules: Unregistered Online Platforms Face Closure
Nepal’s Department of Commerce has made registration mandatory for businesses selling goods and services through websites, mobile apps and social media.

Nepal’s Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has instructed all businesses selling goods and services online to register with its official portal. The requirement follows the implementation of the Electronic Commerce Act, 2081 and the Electronic Commerce Directive, 2082, which introduce stricter regulatory requirements for digital businesses.
The new rules apply broadly to businesses operating through websites, mobile applications and social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. The department has tightened oversight following complaints related to online fraud, misleading advertisements and the sale of low-quality products through digital channels.
Under the new framework, businesses must establish an electronic commerce platform in accordance with Section 4 of the Act and complete the registration process under Section 5. Required documents include business registration details, proof of domain ownership and a privacy policy, among other information.
The department has warned that businesses operating without completing the required registration may have their platforms shut down. Legal action may also be taken against businesses violating the applicable provisions of the Electronic Commerce Directive.
The regulatory move is aimed at making Nepal’s rapidly growing e-commerce sector more transparent and accountable while strengthening consumer protection. Online businesses are therefore required to ensure that their platforms comply with the new registration and regulatory requirements.
