NEPSE to Remain Closed as Government Declares Week-Long Tihar Holiday

The Government of Nepal has announced a week-long public holiday from 3rd Kartik to 8th Kartik, 2082, in celebration of Tihar, one of the country’s most vibrant and widely observed festivals. Following the government decision, the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) will also remain closed throughout the holiday period.

According to NEPSE, regular trading will resume on Sunday, 9th Kartik, 2082 (October 27, 2025), at 11:00 AM. All trading activities, including settlement, clearing, and related operations, will remain suspended during the break.

Tihar, also known as Deepawali or Yamapanchak, is a five-day festival celebrated nationwide. The festival honors Yama, the God of Death, and Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth, symbolizing light over darkness and prosperity over hardship. Each day of Tihar carries cultural and spiritual importance—Kaag Tihar (crow worship), Kukur Tihar (dog worship), Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja (cow and goddess worship), Mha Puja (self-purification), and Bhai Tika (sibling blessing).

During Tihar, homes and streets across Nepal are illuminated with oil lamps, colorful lights, and garlands, creating a festive atmosphere that blends spirituality and celebration. For investors, the NEPSE holiday marks a short pause in trading before markets reopen for post-festival momentum, which traditionally brings increased investor sentiment and higher participation.
