North Korea Accused of Stealing Over $6.3 Billion in Major Binance Cyberattack

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reportedly become the target of one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts in history. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused North Korea of being behind a cyberattack that allegedly resulted in the theft of more than $6 billion worth of cryptocurrency.

According to the FBI, the attack was carried out around October 29 by TraderTraitor, a hacking group linked to North Korea. The agency said the hackers were converting the stolen digital assets into Ethereum and could attempt to conceal the funds through decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and instant cryptocurrency exchange services.

The FBI has urged cryptocurrency companies and other institutions to block transactions involving digital wallets associated with the hackers. The group has previously been accused of targeting major cryptocurrency platforms.

Binance has stated that it has allocated more than $6.34 billion from its company funds to cover losses resulting from the attack. The exchange said it had recovered nearly 90% of the stolen amount by purchasing tokens using its own funds. However, recovering the remaining 10% could take time because some of the affected tokens are not readily available in the market.

In a statement on social media platform X, Binance assured users that it would fully compensate for financial losses caused by the theft. Following the cyberattack, the exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals from its platform. In its latest update, the company said it was preparing to resume withdrawals from Sunday.

As the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance handles substantial digital asset transactions every day. The incident has renewed concerns about cybersecurity, digital asset protection and the safety of cryptocurrency trading platforms.
