Paraguay and Morocco Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16 After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victories

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 delivered another night of thrilling football as Paraguay and Morocco advanced to the Round of 16 following dramatic penalty shootout victories.

Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating four-time world champions Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute with a header from Matías Galarza's cross, capitalizing on Germany's inability to convert possession into goals. Germany responded in the 54th minute when Florian Wirtz assisted Kai Havertz, whose header restored parity.

Extra time remained tense with limited clear-cut opportunities. Germany appeared to have found the winner through Jonathan Tah, but VAR ruled out the goal after determining a foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The decision proved crucial as Paraguay held their nerve in the penalty shootout, with Germany missing three spot-kicks.

In another dramatic encounter, Morocco eliminated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The Dutch took the lead in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who was set up by Crysencio Summerville. Morocco fought back before forcing penalties, where goalkeeper Yassine Bounou became the hero by saving Summerville's attempt. Ismael Saibari then calmly converted the decisive penalty to send Morocco into the next round.

The victories mark significant achievements for both Paraguay and Morocco as they continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns.
