Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 to book their place in the Round of 16.
The first half ended goalless despite Portugal dominating possession for long periods without creating many clear scoring opportunities. Croatia broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Ivan Perišić fired a low strike across goal to give his side the lead.
Portugal responded in the 68th minute after Nikola Vlašić fouled Renato Veiga inside the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo calmly converted the resulting penalty to level the match at 1-1.
Head coach Roberto Martínez substituted Ronaldo in the 81st minute, and the change proved decisive. Substitute Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal in the 94th minute, heading home Rafael Leão's cross to complete Portugal's comeback.
Croatia thought they had equalized deep into stoppage time when an own goal by Rúben Neves found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
With the victory, Portugal advanced to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will face Spain.
