Prabhu Mahalaxmi’s Profit Rises but EPS Falls

Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life Insurance Limited (PMLI) has reported a marginal increase in net profit in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year, but earnings per share declined as claims and expenses increased alongside the company's business growth.

The insurance company earned a net profit of Rs. 37.55 crore by the end of Ashadh, up 1.31% from Rs. 37.07 crore recorded during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Despite the increase, the growth in profit remained limited compared with the expansion in the company's income and premiums.

PMLI's net earned premium increased 20.97% during the review period, indicating significant growth in the premium income retained by the insurer after accounting for relevant adjustments. The company's total income also increased 13.63% compared with the previous fiscal year.

However, higher business activity was accompanied by rising claims and expenses. Total claim payments increased 14.21%, while total expenses rose 14.36% during the review period. The faster increase in these costs relative to the modest growth in net profit limited the amount of additional earnings generated from the company's higher premium and income base.

The impact was particularly visible in earnings per share. Despite net profit increasing, PMLI's EPS declined by Rs. 0.19 to Rs. 7.08. The decline in EPS indicates that profit growth did not keep pace with the company's share capital and per-share earnings base.

At the end of the fourth quarter, the company's net worth per share stood at Rs. 116.58. Its share valuation implied a P/E ratio of 61.20 times based on the reported earnings.

Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life Insurance has a paid-up capital of Rs. 5.31 billion. The company also reported Rs. 1.93 crore in share premium, while its catastrophe fund stood at Rs. 14.85 crore.

The insurer's retained earnings stood at Rs. 42.82 crore, while other equity amounted to approximately Rs. 28.37 crore at the end of the reporting period.

Overall, Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life Insurance's latest results show a clear gap between business growth and per-share earnings. Net earned premium increased 20.97% and total income rose 13.63%, but net profit grew by only 1.31% as claims and expenses increased by more than 14%. As a result, EPS declined to Rs. 7.08 despite the slight increase in total profit.

Meta Description: Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life Insurance’s profit rises 1.31% to Rs. 37.55 crore, but EPS falls to Rs. 7.08 as claims and expenses increase.
