Protests Erupt in Thapathali Against Eviction of Squatter Settlements; Rabi Lamichhane Challenged

Protests have intensified in the Thapathali area following the government’s decision to evict squatter settlements. Locals and youth groups have taken to the streets, raising slogans against the move.

Demonstrators have been chanting slogans such as “Stop bulldozer terror” and “Ensure housing rights for squatters.” They have also called on Rabi Lamichhane to honor his previous statements and stand with the affected communities.

Earlier, Lamichhane had stated that he would stand in protest if bulldozers were used against squatter settlements. However, with the current decision, protesters are questioning his stance and demanding accountability.

The government has issued notices to vacate settlements in Thapathali, Shankhamul, Shantinagar, and Manohara areas. While some residents have started relocating their belongings, others remain firm in their refusal to leave.

Under the leadership of Balen Shah, authorities had instructed security agencies to proceed with clearing the settlements. Following this, local administration initiated the process.

Protesters are also planning a rally from Thapathali to Maitighar Mandala. The movement, led by youth groups, signals a potentially larger public resistance in the coming days.
