RPP Leader Gyanendra Shahi Demands Equal Penalties for Poor Road Infrastructure and Traffic Violations

Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Parliamentary Party leader Gyanendra Shahi has called on the government to introduce legal provisions that hold state authorities accountable for poor road infrastructure alongside stricter penalties for traffic rule violations.

Speaking during the emergency session of the House of Representatives on Sunday, Shahi said that while the government is proposing heavy fines for traffic offenders, it should also ensure that public institutions are held responsible for negligence in road construction and traffic management.

He argued that if citizens can be fined up to Rs 100,000 for violating traffic rules, the state should face similar penalties when it fails to provide safe and reliable road infrastructure.

Shahi proposed that the government should be fined Rs 100,000 if roads are left full of potholes, if traffic lights remain non-functional, or if basic road maintenance is neglected. He also suggested a Rs 50,000 penalty for authorities if traffic police display inappropriate behavior toward the public or if streetlights remain out of service at night.

Emphasizing shared responsibility, Shahi said traffic laws should ensure accountability for both citizens and government agencies. He pledged his support in Parliament for legislation that makes the state equally responsible for maintaining safe roads and public infrastructure.

His remarks come as public debate intensifies over the government's proposal to significantly increase traffic fines under a new transport bill.
