Supreme Court Issues Show-Cause Order Over Government Decision Allowing Personal Secretaries for MPs

The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued a show-cause order on a writ petition filed against the government’s decision to allow federal lawmakers to appoint personal secretaries.

A single bench of Justice Binod Sharma on Monday ordered the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and other defendants to appear with a written response regarding the petition.

The court has also instructed the government to be present for discussions related to the request for an interim order.

The Cabinet meeting held on Ashadh 30, 2083 had decided to allow federal parliamentarians to appoint private personal secretaries. The decision was later published in the Nepal Gazette on Shrawan 4.

Challenging the government’s decision, advocate Prem Raj Silwal had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court last Friday, seeking to annul the notification.

The petition questioned the justification of providing additional facilities to lawmakers through state resources and requested the court to invalidate the government decision.

The Supreme Court will make further decisions after reviewing the government’s response and conducting discussions regarding the interim order.
