Tomato prices jumped sharply at Kathmandu’s Kalimati market on Thursday, with prices of all major tomato varieties increasing by 12% to 15% in a single day.

According to the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Committee, the average wholesale price of large Nepali tomatoes rose 15.38% from Rs. 65 to Rs. 75 per kg.

The price of large Indian tomatoes increased 13.33%, rising from Rs. 75 to Rs. 85 per kg.

Smaller varieties also became more expensive. The average wholesale price of local small tomatoes increased 15.30%, from Rs. 47 to Rs. 55 per kg.

Meanwhile, the price of tunnel-grown small tomatoes rose 12%, from Rs. 61 to Rs. 68 per kg.

Overall, the latest market data shows wholesale tomato prices increasing by Rs. 7 to Rs. 10 per kg in a single day.
