TU Launches Land Recovery Drive, Issues 35-Day Ultimatum to Vacate Encroached Property

Tribhuvan University has formally initiated a campaign to reclaim its encroached land and properties. The university has issued a 35-day notice to individuals and organizations to vacate and return such properties.

According to the notice, assets provided by the Government of Nepal and donor agencies for educational purposes must be returned within the deadline, failing which legal action will be taken. The decision follows the Executive Council meeting held on Chaitra 23, 2082.

A 2081 report by the university’s land investigation committee revealed widespread unauthorized occupation of TU-owned land by individuals, companies, and organizations. Acting on the findings, the university has launched a recovery drive.

The report states that more than 18 organizations have encroached on TU land. Out of over 5,050 ropani, more than 2,000 ropani are under unauthorized control.

In Kirtipur alone, around 1,500 ropani of land is being used by various entities. Despite owning 3,613 ropani in the area, TU is currently utilizing only about 2,500 ropani.

The report also highlights the need for further investigation into land outside the Kathmandu Valley and at constituent campuses. It points out weaknesses in property management and holds responsible authorities accountable.

The committee has recommended legal action against encroachers and recovery of the land. It also suggests further investigations by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and the Central Investigation Bureau in specific cases.
