Two-Day Weekend Boosts Tourism in Chitwan as Sauraha Sees Surge in Domestic Visitors
The implementation of a two-day public holiday on Saturdays and Sundays has significantly increased domestic tourist arrivals in Chitwan's Sauraha.

The introduction of a two-day weekend in Nepal has started to generate positive momentum for the country's tourism sector, particularly in popular domestic destinations such as Sauraha in Chitwan.
Despite the summer season traditionally being considered an off-peak period for domestic travel due to high temperatures, the extended weekend has encouraged more Nepalis to travel and explore tourist destinations. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, jeep safaris, and elephant safari services in Sauraha have reported a noticeable increase in visitor numbers.
Known for its unique blend of nature, culture, and adventure tourism, Chitwan remains one of Nepal’s most popular destinations for both domestic and international travelers. Activities such as wildlife observation, bird watching, boating on the Rapti River, jungle safaris, and cultural experiences continue to attract visitors year-round.
Tourism entrepreneur Dipendra Khatiwada stated that the two-day holiday policy has positively impacted the tourism industry by encouraging people to utilize their weekends for travel and recreation.
Elephant safari remains one of the key attractions in Sauraha. Currently, around 30 elephants are being used for safari operations, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the jungle and observe wildlife such as rhinoceroses, tigers, crocodiles, wild boars, monkeys, and numerous bird species.
Tourism operators also noted that although elephant trading has not resumed since the COVID-19 pandemic, safari services continue with existing elephants. Maintaining a single elephant reportedly costs more than Rs. 100,000 per month.
In addition to wildlife tourism, visitors enjoy boating on the Rapti River, sunset viewing, and experiencing the traditions and culture of the local Tharu community. Business owners say tourist arrivals have been increasing throughout the year, with the two-day weekend providing an additional boost to domestic tourism activity.
