UML Lawmaker Kshitij Thebe Demands Rs 25,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

CPN-UML lawmaker Kshitij Thebe has called on the government to increase the minimum monthly salary for workers to Rs 25,000. Speaking at a meeting of the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare Committee under the House of Representatives on Thursday, he said rising inflation has made it difficult for workers to manage their daily living expenses.

Thebe stressed the need to make the Social Security Fund (SSF) mandatory and more effective to ensure worker protection. He noted that many service provider institutions are hesitant to enroll in the fund and suggested the government introduce incentives, including tax exemptions, to encourage participation.

He also emphasized practical implementation of social security measures with special priority for women workers.

Highlighting the need for domestic employment generation, Thebe said Nepal should invest more in skill development. “We are even bringing craftsmen and barbers from abroad. Now we must focus on making our own workforce skilled,” he said.

The lawmaker also urged the government to create an environment where Class ‘A’ banks could invest in startup businesses at the local ward and municipal levels. According to him, effectively linking investment with employment could create jobs for up to five million Nepalis within the next five years.

He further stressed the need to strengthen programs like the Prime Minister Employment Program to retain young people within the country.
