Himal Power Limited (HPL) is one of Nepal’s pioneering private-sector power developers, best known for owning and operating the Khimti I Hydropower Project, the first large-scale private hydropower project in the country built under the Build–Own–Operate–Transfer (BOOT) model. The project marked a major milestone in Nepal’s energy sector by introducing international-standard project financing, engineering, and operation practices. Established in 1993, HPL was formed as a joint venture between Butwal Power Company (BPC), Statkraft SF, Alstom Power a.s. (formerly ABB Kraft), and GE Energy a.s. (formerly Kværner Energy). Over time, the shareholding structure evolved, and today the company is owned by Statkraft, Enivy AS (formerly BKK), and Butwal Power Company (BPC)—reflecting a strong blend of international hydropower expertise and local industry leadership. Through the Khimti I project, HPL has played an instrumental role in enabling Nepal to modernize its hydropower development framework, attract foreign investment, and expand renewable energy capacity. The company continues to contribute significantly to Nepal’s power generation, technological advancement, and energy security.
