Molung Hydropower Company Limited is a Nepalese independent power producer that owns and operates the 7 MW Molung Khola Hydropower Project, located in Okhaldhunga District, on the Molung River.Established on 31 Baisakh 2067 B.S. (14 May 2010), MHCL later obtained its generation license on 02 Ashoj 2071 B.S. (20 September 2019), providing it the legal permit to generate and supply electricity to the national grid under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Since 12 Chaitra 2074 B.S. (around March 2018), the plant has been operational, delivering run-of-river hydropower to help meet Nepal’s energy demand. As a listed company on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) under the ticker symbol “MHCL,” Molung Hydropower offers investors exposure to Nepal’s hydropower sector infrastructure. The company has 8,025,000 outstanding shares with a paid-up capital of NPR 802.5 million. In recent years, MHCL has faced financial headwinds for example, a quarterly report indicated a net loss, though improved power-sales helped reduce the loss compared to previous years. The fluctuations are partly due to hydrology-dependence (river flow variability), which affects electricity generation in run-of-river projects like Molung. Despite these challenges, MHCL remains a modest but strategic hydropower player, contributing to renewable energy generation and rural electrification potential, while offering shareholders a long-term stake in Nepal’s energy-infrastructure growth.
