Sagarmatha Jalabidhyut Company Limited is a Nepali independent power producer (IPP) focused on run-of-river hydropower development, aiming to contribute to Nepal’s renewable energy generation and help alleviate the country’s longstanding energy deficit. The company’s flagship project is the Super Mai A Hydropower Project (on the Mai / Mai-Khola in Ilam District, Eastern Nepal), which has an installed capacity of 9.99 MW (often rounded to 9.6 or ~10 MW depending on licensing) and uses a gross head of about 199.3 m, delivering electricity to the national grid.Super Mai A began commercial generation on Jestha 32, 2077 B.S. (roughly mid-2020), and since then SMJC has operated as a grid-connected hydropower supplier.SMJC went public and its shares started trading on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) under the symbol “SMJC” in April 2023.As of late 2025, the company has 11,732,000 issued shares (face value NPR 100), bringing the paid-up capital to NPR 1,173,200,000. Market capitalization hovers in the multi-billion-rupee range, reflecting investor interest in hydropower equity. Recognizing growing demand for electricity and the potential of Nepal’s hydrological resources, SMJC has set ambitious medium-term goals: the company states an objective of delivering over 120 MW of clean hydropower capacity to the national grid in upcoming years. In May 2025, the board approved a proposal for a 100% rights-share issuance (1:1 ratio), which, if fully subscribed, would double the paid-up capital a move indicating plans for expansion, new project development, or debt-equity reinforcement. In the most recent financial quarter (FY 2080/81 Q1), SMJC reported an increase in revenue from electricity sales compared to the previous year: net profit rose by about 15.2%, and operating profit increased 16.3%. These results suggest stabilization of generation and improving operational efficiency though like all run-of-river hydropower firms in Nepal, SMJC remains subject to hydrology risk, seasonal flow variability, and dependence on timely water flow and grid connectivity.Overall, Sagarmatha Jalabidhyut Company represents a newer generation of privately-driven hydropower firms in Nepal: combining project-level hydro-engineering, public listing, and ambitious growth plans offering a blend of renewable-energy deployment and investment opportunity for the public.
