A powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed 1,124 and injured over 3,200, destroying more than 8,000 homes in Kunar province.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan has risen to 1,124, with 3,251 people injured, according to the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
The tremor, which hit late on August 31 at 11:47 p.m. local time, destroyed or damaged more than 8,000 residential houses across Kunar province. Relief and rescue teams continue to pull survivors from the rubble, officials said.
The quake’s epicenter was located about 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a depth of 8 kilometers.
The disaster has added to the country’s humanitarian challenges, with thousands left homeless and in urgent need of assistance. Aid agencies are rushing to provide shelter, food, and medical support as aftershocks continue to pose risks in the affected areas.
