Balen Shah Pushes PM Karki to Arrest Oli & Lekhak; UML Files Counter-Complaint

Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) has reportedly urged interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki to issue arrest warrants against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for their alleged roles in the September 8–9 Gen Z protests.

Shah reportedly met PM Karki at Baluwatar. Following this, Karki held a late-night meeting with top security officials, who advised waiting for the findings of the judicial commission led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki. Consequently, the police forwarded Shah’s complaint to the commission instead of registering it directly.

In parallel, activist Sudan Gurung allegedly threatened ministers, escalating pressure on the government. The probe commission clarified that law enforcement agencies do not need to wait for its final report to act against individuals committing criminal offenses.

In a counter-move, UML’s student wing ANNFSU filed a complaint against Mayor Shah and Gurung, accusing them of arson, vandalism, and violence during the protests. Police have forwarded both complaints to the commission for further investigation.

The developments mark a tense escalation in the political fallout from the Gen Z protests, highlighting the growing confrontation between activists and established political parties.
