Balendra Shah Set to Take Oath as Nepal’s Prime Minister Today
Nepal is set to appoint a new prime minister today, with Balendra Shah scheduled to take the oath of office at Shital Niwas.
Nepal is set to witness a key political transition today as Balendra Shah is scheduled to be sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister.
According to the Office of the President, President Ramchandra Paudel will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Shah at Shital Niwas later this afternoon. Prior to the ceremony, Shah will be formally appointed as Prime Minister in accordance with Article 76(1) of the Constitution of Nepal, which allows for the formation of a majority government.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by leaders from various political parties, diplomatic representatives, civil society members, and senior government officials. Alongside the Prime Minister, members of the Council of Ministers are also likely to take the oath of office.
The political development follows the recent parliamentary elections, where the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured a decisive victory, winning 182 seats in the House of Representatives. Shah was subsequently elected as the parliamentary party leader, paving the way for his appointment as Prime Minister.
In the elections, Shah won from Jhapa Constituency No. 5, securing 68,348 votes. The oath-taking of newly elected Members of Parliament has already been completed under the supervision of the senior-most member of the House.
The formation of a majority government under Shah is expected to bring political stability, with markets and investors closely monitoring policy direction and governance priorities in the coming days.
