Nepal is observing a nationwide public holiday today on the occasion of Ram Navami, one of the most significant religious festivals for Hindu devotees. Government offices, banks, and financial institutions across the country remain closed in observance of the festival.

Ram Navami, celebrated on the ninth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Chaitra, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ram, a central figure in Hindu tradition. Devotees across Nepal are offering prayers and performing rituals in temples and homes, reflecting deep religious faith and cultural significance.

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ram was born in the Treta Yuga in Ayodhya to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya. He is widely revered as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is regarded as a symbol of righteousness, duty, and ideal leadership.

The day also falls during the Chaitra Navaratri, one of the four Navaratri periods observed annually. Religious texts describe Lord Ram’s birth under auspicious planetary alignments, including the presence of multiple major ग्रह (planets), which is considered a rare and spiritually significant occurrence.

Beyond its religious importance, Ram Navami holds cultural and social value, with devotees gathering in temples, participating in prayers, and celebrating the ideals associated with Lord Ram, including justice, discipline, and good governance—often referred to as “Ram Rajya.
