Nepal Electricity Authority Secures Approval to Export Additional 35 MW Power to India

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has obtained approval to export an additional 35 megawatts of electricity to India, strengthening Nepal’s growing presence in the regional power market. The authorization was granted by India’s Designated Authority—the Central Electricity Authority (CEA)—on Mangsir 16.

The newly approved export volume includes 24.25 MW from the Seti River Hydropower Project and 10.70 MW from the Upper Tadi Khola Hydropower Project, both of which will supply power to India’s competitive electricity market.

With this approval, NEA’s total electricity export capacity to India has now reached 1,200 MW. In addition, Nepal has been exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from two hydropower projects. During recent bilateral discussions in Bangladesh, both countries reached an agreement in principle to add another 20 MW to Nepal’s export portfolio.

Officials say the growing export opportunities reflect Nepal’s increasing hydropower production capacity and its ability to supply surplus electricity during peak-generation months. The expansion is also expected to support foreign exchange earnings and strengthen cross-border energy cooperation in South Asia.
