Nepali Army Foils Escape of 192 Inmates from Saptari Prison

The Nepali Army (NA) has foiled a mass escape attempt by 192 inmates from the Saptari District Prison, taking them under custody during an attempted breakout.

According to the Public Relations and Information Directorate of the Nepali Army, the inmates were captured while trying to flee from the Rajbiraj-based correctional facility.

The incident comes against the backdrop of nationwide unrest, during which several prisons have been attacked. Authorities confirmed that 25 prisons across Nepal have already reported inmate escapes following recent riots and violent protests.

The Department of Prison Management estimates that nearly 10,000 inmates are currently at large. Security forces have launched intensified search and surveillance operations to locate and recapture the escapees.

The episode underscores the growing strain on Nepal’s security apparatus as it attempts to restore law and order while simultaneously dealing with widespread political and civil unrest.
