NEPSE to Remain Closed as Government Declares Public Holiday for Chhath

Nepal’s financial markets will take a brief pause this week as the government declared Monday, Kartik 10 (October 27, 2025), a public holiday to mark Chhath Parva — one of the most significant Hindu festivals observed in Nepal and parts of northern India.

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has confirmed that trading will remain closed on the day of the festival and will resume on Tuesday, Kartik 11, 2082, at 11:00 AM. All clearing, settlement, and trading activities will follow the regular schedule thereafter.

Chhath Parva, a festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, symbolizes gratitude for sustaining life on Earth. The festival spans four days of fasting, purification, and devotion, particularly observed by women who perform strict rituals to seek blessings for family well-being and prosperity.

Across the country, devotees gather along riverbanks and ponds, offering prayers at sunrise and sunset. The rituals include taking holy dips, preparing traditional offerings, and lighting lamps near water bodies — creating a spiritually vibrant atmosphere nationwide.

While financial operations will remain paused for the day, the festival’s emphasis on faith, discipline, and renewal mirrors the resilience and optimism that also define Nepal’s long-term economic and market outlook.
