Over 3,000 Prisoners Escape from Central Jail, Including Top Bahadur Rayamajhi
More than 3,000 inmates escaped from Kathmandu’s Central Jail, including former minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, accused in the fake Bhutanese refugee case.

More than 3,000 inmates escaped from Kathmandu’s Central Jail in Sundhara, in what authorities described as one of Nepal’s largest-ever prison breaks.
Prison officials confirmed that out of a total of 3,800 prisoners, only about 600 to 700 remain inside the facility following the mass escape.
Among those who fled is Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, a former energy minister and key figure charged in Nepal’s high-profile fake Bhutanese refugee scandal. Rayamajhi had been held in custody awaiting trial.
The incident raises serious concerns over prison security and law enforcement capacity at a time when the country is already grappling with political unrest and widespread demonstrations. Authorities said efforts are underway to track down the fugitives and restore order.
