Private Schools Protest Draft Education Act; Say Closure Looms

Private school operators in Nepal took to the streets of Kathmandu on Thursday, protesting a government plan to revise the Education Act that they claim could effectively shut down private institutions.

The rally, organized by umbrella groups including PABSON, National PABSON, HISSAN, and OPEN, began at Maitighar and moved through Babarmahal before reaching New Baneshwor. Demonstrators carried banners and voiced opposition to provisions in the draft law that they argue would restrict or dismantle the role of private schools in the country’s education system.

While details of the government’s proposed amendments have not been fully disclosed, education groups contend that the legislation would centralize control and diminish the private sector’s contribution. Nepal’s private schools currently account for a significant share of secondary and higher education enrollment, particularly in urban centers.

Stakeholders warn that limiting private participation could disrupt education access and quality, while the government maintains that reforms are intended to strengthen equity and public oversight. Further debate is expected as the draft law moves through policy channels.
