US Dollar Eases Slightly After Recent Highs; Nepali Rupee Strengthens Marginally

The US dollar edged down slightly on Friday after several days of elevated trading levels, according to the foreign exchange rates published by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). The central bank set the buying rate for one US dollar at NPR 143.67 and the selling rate at NPR 144.27—both lower than Thursday’s rates of NPR 144.01 and NPR 144.61, respectively.

The slight decline offers modest relief to the Nepali rupee, which typically weakens when the dollar appreciates. A stronger dollar increases Nepal’s import costs, raises the burden of interest payments on foreign loans, and pushes up the cost of goods and services purchased in dollars. Conversely, remittance inflows, export earnings, and tourism revenues appear higher in rupee terms when the dollar climbs.

International reports suggest the Indian rupee’s weakness—exacerbated by the United States’ 50% tariff on select Indian exports—has also influenced regional currency movements.
